Plans to scale up action against HIV and AIDS in Africa were endorsed by African heads of state and global partners in an international video conference.

"AIDS is undoubtedly Africa’s greatest leadership challenge" said one participant in an exchange that highlighted the need for resources, dialogue and support for women.

The video conference - called a healthcast - was part of the Summit of the African Union which took place in Maputo, Mozambique, in July 2003.

Representatives from 15 countries participated, including the heads of state from Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Chad, Uganda, Lesotho and Algeria.

International participants included Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, and leaders from WHO, UNAIDS, Roll Back Malaria, UNICEF and Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria.

Exchange supported the video conference. Exchange's Andrew Chetley was the chair and coordinator in London, UK.
